Despite serving just four years at the top, the 31st President Herbert Hoover still managed to fill the White House with an impressive eight dogs. Oh, and he also kept two pet alligators, as you do. Here he is pictured with his beloved Belgian Shepherd dog King Tut.

One of the most famous ‘first dogs’ of all time was President Franklin Roosevelt’s Scottish Terrier Fala. The dog’s antics were written about in the media, a film was made about him and he was even made an honorary private in the U.S. Army during the Second World War. The dog was so associated with Roosevelt that when it came time to commission a statue of the great man, he was depicted sitting on a bench with his beloved terrier next to him.
