492 days had gone by and this expecting mother was showing no signs of giving birth any time soon. In fact, the majestic animal was more than happy to lay in her pen alone making no complaints.
All of a sudden, however, with no veterinarians present to help, the rhino went into labour. With just a camera in the room with her, we got to see the magical moment when she gave birth to her young…
The pregnant Indian rhino named Rapti was actually born in Nepal – that is before she was moved to the Hellabrunn Zoo nature reserve in Munich, Germany where she has spent the rest of her life since.
Rapti met her mate at the nature reserve, a fellow Indian rhino named Nikolaus (Nico for short) and this wasn’t the first time she had been pregnant with Nico’s baby, in fact the previous two calves Rapti had given birth to unfortunately died.
