Most people on their drive to work are so preoccupied by how late they’re running or the list of tasks they have ahead of them, that they don’t pay attention to anything other than getting to work safely and on time.

Few people would have the time to stop on their journey to work in order to investigate something as mundane as a garbage bag on the side of a road, that could and most likely would end up being nothing much.

However, thankfully one person did just that and the difference it made was incredible.

Just last Thursday, Malissa Sergent Lewis, who is based in Kentucky, was running late to work and because of that, she decided to take a shortcut.

If she hadn’t this story could have been a whole lot different.

As she took the shortcut, she noticed something rather unusual. There was a garbage bag at the side of the road and it was moving.

When interviewed about the situation, Lewis said “I saw this trash bag in the road, and I thought to myself, ‘Did I just see that bag move?’ The closer I got, I realized it was moving,”

“I could hardly wrap my mind around that. Something was alive in that bag, and I just knew I had to get whatever it was out.”

Whilst it isn’t a usual situation for a person to find themselves in, Lewis didn’t think twice about stopping her car and opening up the bag to find and rescue whatever it was that was inside.

Upon opening the bag, Lewis realized that inside the bag was an abandoned puppy – he was wearing wearing a collar but no tag.

She took the puppy with her and has been trying to find the owners ever since. However, there is a good chance no one will claim it.

Instead of giving to adorable puppy away to another home and family, after bonding with the bundle of joy, Lewis and her family have decided to keep the pup, which they have now named Hefty.

It’s heartbreaking that someone could abandon an animal at all, never mind in such a cruel way, but thankfully Hefty was one of the lucky ones who was found before it was too late.

He’s happy, healthy, being looked after well and is now part of their happy family.
